GPS

GPS is the abbreviation of Global Positioning System and is the commercial name for a world wide satellite navigation system.

The offical name is NAVSTAR; NAVigation Satellite Time And Ranging. The system contains of a minimum of 24 satellites that move around the earth and transmit their own signal. With the receive of at least 4 of these satellites a GPS receiver can locate its position on earth. The GPS system is working 24h each day, can be used all over the world and works under all weather conditions. It is a military system that is made available by the Government of the United States to be used by everybody. The GPS system is made for navigation purposes, geodetic navigation system, geografic information system and accurate time estimation.
