Android overtakes Symbian

In the last quarter of 2010, more phone with Android were sold than phones running Symbian. It was for the first time. Analysts thought that Android would take the lead much later. Some of them even named 2014.

Android won the race against Nokia's operating system Symbian predominantly due to cheaper handsets. Now that the OS is also available to people with less money, Android covers a large part of the mobile phone market. The conclusion that Android overtook Symbian, was based on sales figures that were published by Nokia. Nokia sold 28 million smartphones with Symbian. Researchers of Canalys estimate that 32 million Android phones were sold.

In 2010, Symbian saw some massive structure changes. It stopped to exist as an independent organization. Some developers lost their Job when Nokia had to admit that its attempts to make other manufacturers join Symbian failed.
