Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

Adding the Galaxy Z Flip4 to our database was pretty easy. Take the Flip3 from a year ago and increase fast charging from 15 to 25 Watts. Then adjust the Android and One UI version and increase the battery capacity to 3700mAh. Display resolutions, screen sizes, camera resolutions, and even the device's thickness have remained the same. The differences are disappointing considering the slightly higher suggested retail price of €1,099.

Speaking about software, Samsung promises a better camera experience for the Galaxy Z Flip4. That's partly because the hinge can be partially opened between 75 and 115°. After opening the FlexCam mode, you can share photos or videos directly on social media. Samsung has collaborated with Meta, known for Facebook, for this feature. Despite its equal 12MP resolution, the camera has a 65% brighter sensor.

Longer battery life, faster charging

Besides a thinner hinge, a back made of frosted glass, and a glossy metal frame, the biggest difference from its predecessor is the battery. The battery inside the Flip 4 has a larger capacity of 3700 mAh and can be charged faster. Thanks to Super Fast Charging, half an hour of charging should be enough for half a charge.

Flip 4 Bespoke Edition

As with the Flip 3, Samsung is announcing a Flip 4 Bespoke Edition. Instead of 49 different color combinations, there are now 75 combinations available. You can only choose the color of the glass and frame. Changing a panel color in the future becomes possible thanks to the Bespoke Upgrade Care service. Adjusting the frame color is not possible.

Flip 4 price and availability

The suggested retail price of the Samsung Flip 4 is €1,099 for the 128 GB model. There are also versions with 256 and 512GB of storage for €1,159 and €1,279, respectively. Available colors are Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue.

The Galaxy Flip 4 can be ordered immediately and delivery begins August 11, 2022. Those who purchase the device as a preorder will receive one year of Samsung Care+, protecting the device from drop or screen damage.

@evleaks previously tweeted a similar image. Also, the date of August 10 was mentioned several times before. Samsung now confirms both via the invitation below on its Twitter account.

It now seems certain that the Flip 4 will see the light of day on August 10. If that goes the same for the Fold 4 is not certain. References to this device are missing from the video seen above. Samsung usually hid references to the Fold in previous announcements.

The fact is that Samsung previously always announced a Flip and Fold simultaneously. For now, we, therefore, assume that Samsung will announce both phones during this Unpacked Event.

The Flip 4 appears to be coming out in 4 colors; gray, purple, gold and light blue. At least according to the image below which was first published by Evan Blass on 91mobiles. In addition to the colors shown here, we expect a Bespoke Edition where users can combine selected colors.

Elsewhere on the web, other images of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 appeared. These appear to be marketing material as well. According to earlier reports, the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 would feature a larger outer screen, but the image below doesn't seem to confirm that immediately. The layout with the two cameras and LED flash also seems unchanged.

Earlier we saw images of the side of the Flip 4, now thanks to MySmartPrice we also see the front and inside. Possibly Samsung is targeting a better build quality and lower price for its new Flip generation. We will hear more on August 10, when Samsung will most likely hold an Unpacked event.

For those thinking; we've already seen images of the Flip 4, right? That's true. These images were recreated renders based on leaked factory drawings. Those usually give us a good idea of the final design but sometimes has subtle differences.

Moreover, we often don't know then what colors will be available. These renders above leave no doubt about that; the Galaxy Flip4 will soon come in purple. Or, as Samsung prefers to call it, Bora Purple. The edges of the Flip 4 seem a bit less convex than with the Flip 3 and the cameras also protrudes out a bit more. The latter is probably because Samsung is opting for better optics.

Flip 4 specs

If we zoom in a bit more on the hinge, it looks more compact. The simpler it is, the less prone it is to defects. The Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 is further said to get a slightly larger battery, a larger screen on the outside, and a newer chipset.

The Flip 4 promises to be Samsung's most affordable foldable, following the footsteps of the Flip 3. In terms of design, both are very similar although the Galaxy Flip 4 appears flatter with a modified hinge.

Samsung still applies a two-tone design where both the external display and dual camera sit on a black section. The layout of those components is unchanged though the screen seems slightly larger. The most significant change appears to be on the inside. The screen still measures 6.7 inches, but there is no visible crease this time.

Less visible crease

Most users of a Flip 3 did not complain about the crease. But those who saw pictures of it often mentioned it. Samsung now seems to have done something about that.

Announcement date Flip 4

Samsung has further improved battery life. Mainly by placing a larger 3700mAh one (versus 3300mAh). According to the source, this results in a slightly thicker phone. If we are to believe this tweet by Jon Prosser, Samsung will announce the Flip 4 along with the Fold 4 on Wednesday, August 10.

The specification list below also comes from @heyitsyogesh. He previously brought us specifications of the also unannounced Fold 4. Of course, again, nothing is final until Samsung has officially announced both the Fold4 and Flip 4.

At first glance, we see little difference from the existing Flip 3. It too features a folding 6.7-inch display, two 12MP cameras, a 10MP selfie camera, and 128 or 256GB of storage with 8GB of RAM.

Differences with Flip3

Differences lie in the slightly larger screen outside; 2.1 versus 1.9" on the Z Flip 3. However, the biggest difference is the larger battery; 3700 versus 3300 mAh. This more than 10% larger battery capacity seems not much but combined with the more energy-efficient Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, it may be able to deliver a noticeably longer battery life.

Compact hinge

That the Flip 4 specifications don't differ much seems to suggest that this will be a modest upgrade. We got that idea earlier thanks to leaked images of the device at 91mobiles.

Samsung may use a different type of hinge, which is significantly smaller. A foldable's hinge is the most complex part and contains many moving parts. The fewer of them, the more reliable it becomes. Whether the future hinge is only smaller or also has fewer parts is impossible to say at the moment.

It takes a lot to bring a new mobile to the market. It starts with an idea, which has to be worked out, a prototype is created, and production lines are set up. It usually takes a year before a phone is ready to ship. Now the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 are one step closer to being released.

According to Sammobile, Samsung has begun mass production of the various parts that make up both phones. Sammobile does not say what parts exactly, but it would involve several parts. So it seems that the design is final.

10 million sales

Making parts is one thing, putting the phones together is another one. The source thinks Samsung will start doing that in June. That will give Samsung enough time to build up sufficient stock. Samsung's goal is to sell no less than 10 million foldables by 2022. It is expected that 70% of these will be a Flip 4, with the remaining 30% for the Fold 4.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung's most popular foldable phone, has a battery with a combined capacity of 3300 mAh. We wrote "combined" because the device has two batteries; one in each half. The same will presumably be true of the Flip 4 but will be a lot bigger this time.

Because according to the usually well-informed Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will get a 3700mAh battery. An increase of 400mAh and thus more than 10%. This should undoubtedly lead to longer battery life. A frequently heard complaint about the Flip 3 was a weak battery life. So that problem is solved!

Faster charging

A larger battery capacity is one, but hopefully Samsung will also do something about the maximum charging power. Fast charging on the Flip 3 is stuck at a maximum of 15W and that can hardly be called fast charging. An increase to 25W, as with the S22, would be a welcome addition. Short charging sessions in between will also help you get better through the day.

Flip 4 launch

The launch of the Z Flip 4 is not expected until August 2022. Samsung will then presumably announce it together with the Z Fold 4 during a specially organized Unpacked Event. The latter will have a battery capacity of 4400mAh, according to the same source. That's the same amount as the current Fold 3.

Samsung equipped the first Flip with a 1.1-inch cover screen. Barely big enough for a single line of text. The 2nd Flip, the Flip 5G didn't change that but the secondary screen of the Flip 3 got significantly bigger. It went up in size to 1.9 inches. Today's report says that the Flip 4 will get a cover screen of at least 2 inches.

An increase from 1.9 to 2.0 seems small but the rumor speaks of a size starting with a "2". So in theory it could also be 2.9 inches. Whether a larger screen also means that Samsung will abandon the famous two tone design remains to be seen. This gave the Flip its own character, which also better integrated the cover screen into the design without immediately becoming cluttered.

Flip 4 sales price

The Samsung Flip is Samsung's most affordable foldable and therefore also one of the best sellers. So stakes are high. Still, we don't think the Flip 4 will be a radically different device. It will presumably still have a clamshell design with more or less the same dimensions. Perhaps Samsung will manage to reduce the price to make it even more accessible.
