Microsoft closes Windows Mobile Marketplace for developers

Developers of applications for Windows Mobile get until July 15th to add their apps. Then the curtains for the predecessor of Windows Phone 7 will be falling, less then a year after the system was launched.

Developers recently received a mail from Microsoft, in which the decision is announced. The company wil stop receiving new apps. As well, updating existing apps is not possible after July 15th. Users of Windows Mobile 6.x devices can still continue to use the Marketplace, but they will no longer find new apps.

The news comes simultaneously with the release of a new version of Windows Phone, Mango. This allows Windows Mobile support to be removed in silence, although there are still phones being sold with this operating system. The latest version of Windows Mobile is 6.5.3. The system was widely used on PDAs and smartphones, but lost popularity when the iPhone came to the market.
