iPhone 18 Pro Max Gets Significantly Larger Battery, Base Pro Barely Any

Are you interested in the upcoming Apple iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max? If so, you'll definitely want to know how much larger the battery is. Thanks to a listing from a Chinese regulatory agency, we now have the answer.

Apple is known for using relatively small batteries in its iPhones. Not because Apple is stingy (which it is, by the way), but because iPhones simply handle fewer mAh better than equivalent Android smartphones. It is therefore better to compare iPhones with iPhones, as shown in the table below.

ChinaDifference from predecessorUSDifference from predecessor
iPhone 18 Pro4056 mAh+68 mAh (+1.4%)4288 mAh+36 mAh (+0.8%)
iPhone 18 Pro Max5391 mAh+568 mAh (+10.5%)5567 mAh+479 mAh (+8.6%)

Notably, US models feature larger batteries than Chinese ones. This is likely because the latter include a physical SIM slot, which comes at the expense of battery space. European models are also expected to feature a SIM slot, so look to the Chinese version to gauge the battery size of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Another takeaway is that the gains are primarily found in the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max, where capacity increases by 8-10%. However, buyers of the regular iPhone 18 Pro shouldn't be disappointed; this model already received a significant upgrade with the iPhone 17 series. Additionally, the more efficient A20 Pro chip is expected to extend battery life.

Whether these are the actual battery capacities will be confirmed once the first iPhone 18 models are opened up. Apple typically doesn't share this information. The figures roughly align with data shared by insider Digital Chat Station in June, when increases of 0.8 to 1.7% were predicted for the Pro version.
