Cat is a brand name owned by Caterpillar, an American manufacturer of heavy-duty vehicles such as excavators. Cat does not manufacture the phones itself; instead, it licenses its name to the Bullitt Group. The Bullitt Group also manufactures phones for Land Rover, JCB, and Kodak. All models are rugged and, in most cases, water- and dust-resistant, making them suitable for use on construction sites.

Cat Phones History

The first Cat phones were released in 2013, and new models have been announced every year since then. Most Cat phones are smartphones that run on Android. However, there are also Cat feature phones that use their own operating system. In 2018, the company released its first feature phone running KaiOS, which is derived from Firefox OS. The advantage of this is that there is an app store available from which apps can be easily downloaded.

With the announcement of the Cat S60 in 2016, Cat incorporated a FLIR thermal camera into a cell phone for the first time. This allows you to see the temperature of objects on the screen. The FLIR thermal camera was continuously improved in subsequent models of the S60, securing its place in the product lineup.

Temporary End to Cat Phones

In early 2024, it was announced that the Bullit Group had filed for bankruptcy. The company had reportedly been experiencing financial difficulties for some time and was struggling to restructure. This marks the end—for now—of the rugged Cat phones.
