“Finally another compact and inexpensive Nexus”

Google Nexus 5X review: finally another compact and inexpensive Nexus Together with the previously reviewed Nexus 6P, Google also presented the Nexus 5X. This also runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow but has a 5.2 inch screen and plastic housing. With the Nexus 5X there is finally another Nexus available with a smaller screen size and after two years possibly a worthy successor to the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 offered a lot of value for money and with the more expensive Nexus 6 that had changed a bit. Also with the Nexus 6P and 5X there was a lot of criticism about the high introduction price. Especially for the smaller Nexus 5X made of plastic the price seemed dispro…

Google Nexus 5X product details

The Google Nexus 5X is a remake of the popular Nexus 5 from 2013. This 5X is also made by LG, so we recognize a lot in it. And yet the device is also modern with new features and better specs.

Modern Nexus, yet compact

This Nexus 5X is the obvious candidate for those looking for a compact Nexus phone. Did Google surprise friend and foe in 2014 with the immense Nexus 6 of (indeed) 6 inches, the screen in the 5X is a more modest 5.2 inches in size. At least that still fits in a hand, a bag and in a pocket. LG is applying an IPS screen with Full HD resolution. To put that in plain human language; that's more than fine and it delivers sharp images and realistic colors. For those for whom that screen is still a size too small can always go for that other Nexus device that also came out in 2015; the Nexus 6P from Huawei.

Special camera, quick privacy

Google is focusing on two things with the 2015 Nexus handsets; the camera and the fingerprint scanner. That camera is 12.3 megapixels in size, which at first glance seems like an odd number. That's because the Sony sensor is actually meant for a video camera and features extra-large pixels. In this case, large is good because it means that they catch a lot of light. Photos in the dark or dusk are therefore in many cases well-lit. The Nexus 5X can focus by means of laser beams. That sounds futuristic, but LG has been using it for some time. In addition, the camera works with phase and contrast detection and that ensures fast focusing and a smaller chance of blurred photos and videos. We already mentioned it briefly; the fingerprint scanner. This is located on the back of the Google Nexus 5X and it works extremely fast. Fingers are registered in a few seconds and you then only need to touch it lightly to gain access. Fast and secure.

Main Google Nexus 5X specifications

  • 12.3 megapixel rear camera + 4K video recording
  • Choice of 16 and 32 GB storage
  • Sharp 5 megapixel selfie camera
  • Hexa-core processor (Snapdragon 808) at 1.8 GHz + 2 GB RAM memory
  • Featured with fast 4G mobile internet
  • Screen of 5.2 inches in size with Corning Gorilla glass

Quick Android updates

At the time of writing, you can buy the Google Nexus 5X in two colors; white and black. Next, you'll have to Choose between either 16 or 32 GB. That's not much and you can not add memory for example via a separate memory card. That's a shame but fortunately you can store a lot in the cloud, photos and music for example. In terms of price, it is worthwhile to look around. The competition also has interesting alternatives for this price. The advantage of this Nexus 5X is that Android updates arrive almost as the first. Google will continue to support the device for years and you do not have to wait long for updates.

Pro and cons Google Nexus 5X

  • Finally, a compact Nexus again
  • Great screen
  • Fast fingerprint recognition
  • Impressive light-sensitive camera
  • High price and limited storage
