    The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra might as well have been called the Note 22 Ultra. At first glance, it has little to do with a Galaxy S phone. It is more angular, you operate it with a built-in pen and it has specifications that are extremely high-end. How high-end are you asking? We will explain that here.

    The king is dead, long live the king!

    The Galaxy Note series has officially come to an end with the arrival of this S22 Ultra. Although it looks more like the successor to the Note 20 Ultra than the S21 Ultra. But enough about that. Because the S22 Ultra is so much more than a name. It is the very best that Samsung currently has to offer. From screen to camera, from pen to battery. And it's not even absurdly expensive. For example, it's more affordable than the Note 20 Ultra was at the time.

    Integrated S Pen

    Let's start with the screen. Samsung is applying its very latest LTPO panel. One with minimum 1 and maximum 120Hz screen refresh. Energy efficient and smooth when needed. Bright too because with a peak brightness of 1750 nits it is the brightest screen Samsung ever put in a phone. Like its predecessor, the screen recognizes the S Pen but a bit faster. The delay between touch and drawing is a negligible 2.8 microseconds. From an already smooth 7ms first. Writing feels like writing on real paper. This time, you keep the pen in the device itself. Besides writing, you can also use it to operate the S22 Ultra. Use Air Actions to flip through pages, zoom in on photos and increase the volume.

    Nightography camera

    Like its predecessor(s), the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 108MP camera system consisting of 4 cameras. There is an ultra-wide-angle lens and 2 telephoto lenses with 3 and 10x zoom respectively. What is new is the improved AI that makes zooming a lot sharper. Night photography has also been taken in hand thanks to Super Clear Glass for the lens. This reduces lens flare at dusk. Videos are now even smoother and photos with people in them sharper because the Ultra can focus on 10 different faces at once.

    Finally some serious fast charging

    Finally Samsung has done something about fast battery charging. Instead of using 25 Watts, the S22 Ultra can be quickly charged at a whopping 45 Watts. You will have to purchase the 45W Power Adapter separately though because it is missing from the box. The 5000 mAh has enough capacity for over a day of use and can also be charged wirelessly. You can even charge others wirelessly with it, also called Wireless PowerShare. The front and back consist of Gorilla Glass Victus+ held tightly together by an Armor Aluminum frame resulting in an IP68 waterproof phone. On the back, unfortunately, you won't find the telling Contour Cut camera layout of previous S models. Samsung has instead placed the individual lenses loose on the back it seems. Tastes differ.

    Several users of a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra are reporting problems with GPS. As a result, the device is unable to determine its location. On a Samsung forum the complaints are pouring in, however, a simple work-around is available.

    A simply reboot of the S22 Ultra seems to be enough. For now until Samsung fixes the problem with a software update. Something that seems only a matter of time because the complaints are piling up on Samsung's very own forum.

    Most users see a message that reads: "searching for GPS". GPS is the abbreviation for Global Positioning System; a worldwide network of satellites to determine your exact location. Indispensable when using navigation apps. The problem seems to occur after prolonged inactivity and can be fixed with a simple reboot. Why of the S22 series only the Galaxy S22 Ultra is affected is something we can only speculate about.

    GPS bugfix

    As far as we can find out, Samsung has not yet officially responded to the above problem. Given the temporary remedy, it seems that a bugfix in the form of a software update will offer solace. When this will come is unknown. The Ultra is the most elaborate S22 model and thus of important enough for Samsung to get to work quickly.

    An image has appeared on Weibo showing the S22 Ultra + some specifications. Because of this, we seem to finally know what cameras it has, how many megapixels, how big the battery is, how fast it can be charged, and what memory options are expected. We may also have the final retail price for you.

    The Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G promises to be the top model of the S22 series with built-in S Pen, 5 cameras on the back, bright and sharp screen on the front and a big battery inside. The cameras on the back are the following:

    • 108MP f/1.8 wide angle
    • 10MP f/4.9 telephoto for 3x zoom
    • 10MP f/4.9 telephoto periscope for 10x zoom
    • 12MP f/2.2 ultra wide angle

    2 zoom lenses

    It is somewhat notable that there are 2 different zoom lenses present. The idea behind this is that you can zoom in at both 3x and 10x and get the sharpest result possible. Also you want a slightly wider image at 3x zoom than at 10x. Using two different lenses offers just that. The front camera is a 40MP one with an f/2.2 wide angle lens.

    The image above further mentions an S Pen with a latency of just 2.8ms. That's considerably faster than the 9ms of the S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra before it. Writing on the device will feel much more natural as a result.

    Memory options S22 Ultra

    Other specifications mentioned are a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen with a peak brightness of 1500 nits. Earlier rumors mentioned 1750-1800 nits. Furthermore, we see a 5000 mAh large battery with 45W fast charging. That's the same size as the S21 Ultra but is faster to charge. In terms of memory options, we don't see any changes. As always those are:

    • 12GB RAM / 128GB ROM
    • 12GB RAM / 256GB ROM
    • 16GB RAM / 512GB ROM

    Notable about this is that there will be no 1TB version. Competitor Apple does have a version with that much storage memory. Samsung would follow according to earlier rumors but that does not seem to happen according to this rumor.

    S22 series recommended retail prices

    What remains are the prices. How much are we going to pay for the S22 Ultra? And how much for the S22+ and S22? The answer to that may be provided by Roland Quandt. According to his information, European prices are as follows:

    If these are indeed the recommended retail prices then the S22 series will be just as expensive as its predecessor. A nice price reduction as with the S21 series will therefore in all likelihood not be given. It is also worth mentioning that the S22 Ultra will have an entry-level version with 8GB of RAM while we do not see that option in the image at the top of the article. The entry-level S21 Ultra got 12GB of RAM memory.

    S22 Unpacked Event

    Whether the above information is correct will become clear when Samsung officially announces the series. It has already announced that this will happen in February but an exact date is still missing. There are rumors that speak of Tuesday, February 8, there are rumors that speak of Wednesday, February 9. Who is right may soon follow when Samsung announces the exact date.

    A new year, a new picture of an unannounced phone. This time of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, or will it soon be known as the S22 Note? You still owe us the answer to that one. But we do have images from all sides of this device.

    Because thanks to @evleaks (restricted access), we have yet another image of the S22 Ultra. This Ultra is pictured with an S Pen and that's for a reason. Like the S21 Ultra, it offers support for the pen, but it will be the first Galaxy S phone were you can also store the pen.

    We see the S22 Ultra in a bronzed color where the pen comes in black. Only the push button will be the same color as the body. The sides of the phone are rounded just like previous Note phones. The top and bottom are flat though. Unlike other Galaxy S22 models, the S22 Ultra does not have the camera island sticking out. Instead, the individual cameras stick out from the back.

    Brightest screen ever

    Samsung is presumably equipping the Galaxy S22 Ultra with its very brightest display ever. If earlier rumors are true, the peak brightness will be a whopping 1750 nits. On the Galaxy S21 Ultra this was 1500 nits. Perhaps the S22+ will get the same screen as the Ultra. Both phones are expected to have a standard brightness of 1200 nits.

    Ben Geskin has posted part of the final marketing poster on which both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22+ are posing. Not only that, but we can also see what colors both devices will come out in.

    The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is coming and we are going to hear a lot of that in the near future. The amount of leaked information is piling up and there is more on the way. Today it's the turn of an alleged official poster showing the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the S22+. In a pink/copper and white/silver color respectively.

    The above image appeared on the Twitter timeline of Ben Geskin. How Ben got this image is not clarified but he claims that these are official images. Renders of both phones leaked out earlier but these are the first official images for now, if the rumors are true of course.

    Exteriors

    Because we already knew what both phones will look like, the image above teaches us little new in that area. The Ultra, which may soon be called "S22 Note", has a different back, it does not look like an S22 phone. The top is also not rounded off like the sides. There is even a slot for an S Pen at the bottom, something that was missing from the S21 Ultra despite that it did support the pen.

    Expected colors

    In addition to the colors shown here, the S22 and S22 Plus will soon come out in black, gray, beige, blue, green, purple and rose gold. We expect the S22 Ultra in fewer colors but still in white, black, red and green.

    If you have seen pictures of the upcoming Galaxy S22 series, this story won't come as a surprise. The largest S22, previously called the S22 Ultra, looks very different from its smaller S22 and S22+ siblings. And that is possibly for a reason.

    Because according to a new source, the device that we have been calling S22 Ultra up until now will be given a completely different name. One that better suits its biggest advantage; support for the S Pen. Thanks to the more angular appearance and the built-in S Pen, it not only looks very much like a Note phone, but possibly also gets that name; the 'S22 Note'.

    Although the rumor sounds plausible we have to realize that it leans on a single source for now. Or rather; one tweet. The Note and Ultra have always had a lot in common; big phones with high-end specs. Now that the Galaxy Note series has been discontinued and taken over by the Galaxy S series, a small reference to it is the least Samsung can do.

    Despite a possibly different name, we are still talking about the same device. One with a 6.81-inch large AMOLED display, probably with a fast 120Hz display and with a high QHD+ resolution, quadruple camera in a P-shaped layout and of course a built-in S Pen.

    As far as we're concerned it's still too early to present this rumor as truth. We are waiting for the launch and the final word from Samsung. That should possibly happen February 8, 2022. That date was previously mentioned by Jon Prosser as the date for an Unpacked Event. Prosser predicts more often correct information about unannounced phones but he is also sometimes wrong. We will have to wait and see.

    First real photo shows Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

    It seems that we have the first real life photos of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with its new camera design on the back. And it immediately puts an end to the discussion of what that new camera will look like. Samsung is opting for LG's teardrop design.

    The photos were published by Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech. We see a Note-like phone that is supposed to represent the S22 Ultra. At least the design matches previously surfaced CAD drawings.

    Slightly sloped screen edges and room for an S Pen at the bottom. However, it is the back that catches most of our attention. There are 4 cameras with an extra round cutout for what looks like several sensors. The placement of the various cameras looks a lot like the LG Velvet. Despite the hopelessly optimistic sticker that reads "Confidential, no photos allowed, not for sale and do not leak info," someone did anyway and passed pictures to Jon.

    No Contour Cut Camera Design

    The camera reportedly consists of a 108MP main camera, 12MP ultra wide angle, 10MP 3x telephoto and 10MP 10x telephoto. The latter is presumably the periscope camera that can be seen at the bottom left. The likely reason why Samsung doesn't use the same Contour Cut Camera design as other recent Galaxy phones is to keep the weight down. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will be a big phone and then weight is always something to keep a close eye on.

    Application date S22 Ultra

    In another tweet, Jon reports that Samsung will announce the Galaxy S22 series during an Unpacked Event on February 8. Samsung will start taking preorders from that date, after which the phones will be available on February 18th. Whether this is actually the case remains to be seen. Samsung has yet to announce an event.
