Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 gets 15% larger battery than predecessor

A 5000 mAh battery capacity is the minimum for most phones these days, but for Samsung's Fold series, this marks an important milestone. This is the first time Samsung has broken the 5000 mAh barrier with a foldable phone.

Samsung prioritized a slim body for the Fold 7 at the time. This left less room for the battery, bringing its capacity to 4400 mAh. For a phone with such a large screen area, that's very little. The Fold 8 finally offers improvement here, though the step remains modest.

The Fold 7 was praised for its thinness, but criticized for its limited battery life. Can the Fold 8 fix this?

At least that's according to a rumor on Dutch-language GalaxyClub. They reportedly found the future battery Samsung plans to implement in the Fold 8 with a combined typical capacity of 5000 mAh.

Despite a larger battery capacity, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will not break any records. For example, Honor uses a 6660 mAh unit in its comparable Magic V6. This difference is due to the use of silicon-carbon technology, while Samsung sticks to less efficient lithium-ion technology. These so-called Si-C batteries have a higher energy density so you still get more mAh out of a physically smaller battery.

Fear of Note 7 repeat slows Samsung innovation

Samsung doesn't seem ready for Si-C batteries yet, and given the Note 7 fiasco, that's also an understandable decision. The recall of that model cost the company 4.6 billion euros. Because the battery was too tight in the casing, it could catch fire in extreme cases. So Samsung is no longer taking any chances when it comes to batteries.

Although the Fold 8's battery is presumably larger, we don't expect the device to be. Samsung has clearly taken a path with its recent Galaxy Z series where the focus is on thinness. And as a result, sales figures also increased significantly. According to Counterpoint figures, Samsung sold 2.5x more Fold 7 units than of the Fold 6. This makes the Fold 7 Samsung's best-selling Fold model since the release of the first Fold in 2019.
