Fairphone announces the Fairphone (Gen. 6) with 8-year updates and 5-year warranty
As predicted, Fairphone announced its latest sustainable and repairable phone, which is now also modular. The Fairphone 6 comes with a five-year warranty, eight years of software updates, and a more durable, expandable design with matching accessories.
Fairphone has decided to call the device The Fairphone (Gen. 6) instead of Fairphone 6. The new name fits what Fairphone calls its "most advanced and competitive smartphone to date." With this release, the Dutch company hopes to live up to its international ambitions.
At least the device looks much more modern, with clean lines, minimal fuss, and playful details. For example, the brightly colored button on the side stands out immediately. Located above the power button, it activates Fairphone Moments. Sliding it down activates focus mode, which reduces distractions from notifications and other sources.
Integrated accessories
Fairphone releases matching accessories that you can screw onto the Fairphone Gen 6. There are two screws on the back of the device that you can use to remove the battery cover. In its place, you can insert a card holder with room for three cards. There is also a protective cover that fits the card holder, allowing you to use both simultaneously.
In addition to the protective case and card holder, you can attach a phone cord and finger loop in a similar way. This makes the device partially modular, allowing Fairphone to release future accessories.
Modernized hardware
In terms of hardware, the Fairphone is innovative, featuring a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor instead of the less powerful IoT chip found in the previous model. The phone has a smooth 120 Hz display, and the battery lasts for two days. Fairphone claims that the battery can be half-charged in just 25 minutes. Should your battery need replacing, you can easily swap it out yourself.
This time, the screen is protected by the sturdier Gorilla Glass 7i. Durability remains paramount; you can replace up to 12 parts of the device yourself without voiding the warranty. The warranty is exceptionally long at five years, and you will receive software upgrades until 2032.
With Android or /e/OS
Fairphone offers the Gen 6 with either Android 15 or the Google-free /e/OS, both with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, for a suggested retail price of €599 and €649, respectively.
