Cell Phones Without a BKR Record

Would you like a new phone without a BKR registration? Whether or not that registration applies depends on how much device credit is included in your plan. Below, you can compare the phones and plans where that credit stays below the legal limit.

When does a cell phone contract result in a BKR registration?

If the device loan is €250 or more, the provider must report the loan to the Credit Registration Bureau (BKR). If the amount included in your subscription is less than that, the loan will not be reported. These rules apply to all providers and are set forth in the Financial Supervision Act.

The application process includes a creditworthiness check, during which the provider reviews your income, your expenses, and your BKR file. If the amount is below the threshold, no report is filed; however, the provider will still conduct its own payment check, for example, to verify any outstanding invoices.

Why a BKR Registration Matters

A loan in your record is taken into account with a subsequent application, such as for a mortgage: the monthly payment reduces your borrowing capacity. After repayment, the data remains in the Central Credit Information System (CKI) for five years by default, calculated from the moment the provider terminated the agreement.

A device loan is a standard credit registration without any payment arrears—it’s not a blacklist entry. If you don’t plan to take out a mortgage, loan, or lease in the coming years, it makes more sense to choose based on price and term rather than based on the registration. Be sure to factor in the term, because those five years don’t start until after the final payment.

How to Avoid a BKR Registration

There are four options, and they can be combined.

  • A device below the limit: if the device itself costs less than the limit, then there’s nothing to calculate.
  • Down payment: you pay a portion upfront, so that the remaining balance included in your plan stays below the limit.
  • A standalone device: You pay for the phone in one lump sum and also sign up for a plan without a device, so there is no credit involved at all.
  • Refurbished: A inspected and refurbished device costs less, making the first two options more feasible.

What all these options have in common: the credit included in your plan stays below the legal limit, so nothing is reported and your borrowing capacity remains unaffected. Here, you’re not choosing between whether or not to be registered, but between how you pay for the device.

What a lower credit limit means for your monthly payments

If you paid for the device in full, your bill will consist only of the costs for data and calling. With a down payment, part of the device cost remains in your monthly payment, but less than if you spread the full cost of the device over time.

Not sure which plan to choose?

The list above is already filtered to show plans where the device credit remains below the legal limit, so no BKR registration is required.
