HMD Global is originally a Finnish company that traces its roots to the former Nokia. It is even headquartered at the Nokia Campus in Espoo, Finland. The letters HMD stand for Human Mobile Devices.
History of HMD Global
After Nokia’s mobile phone division was sold to Microsoft in 2014, part of it was repurchased in 2016 by a new company called HMD Global. This company acquired the rights to use the Nokia name on phones.
HMD Global was founded by a number of former Nokia employees with support from the Taiwanese company Foxconn. In late 2016, HMD Global released its first Nokia phone: the Nokia 150. This was a fairly simple feature phone. Not long after, in 2017, HMD Global announced its first Nokia smartphone: the Nokia 6.
