Is This Really a Discount? How to Spot a Good Smartwatch Deal
Not every crossed-out price is a discount. Many stores list the manufacturer’s suggested retail price as the “starting at” price, even though virtually no one pays that price once a watch has been on the market for a few months. So the question isn’t how much of a percentage discount you’re getting, but what you’re currently paying at other stores for the exact same model. You can see that in the overview above.
When does a smartwatch’s price really drop?
Two factors consistently drive prices down. The first is the arrival of a successor model: as soon as the new generation is announced, the previous model’s price drops, even though you often get the same sensors and comparable battery life in return. The second is the well-known sales periods: Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the weeks around Sinterklaas and Christmas, and the January clearance sales. Outside of these periods, the price difference between stores is usually greater than the discount itself.
What you’re giving up with a discounted model
A substantial discount almost always means the model has been on the market for a while. That’s usually not a problem, but keep two things in mind: how long the manufacturer will continue to provide software updates for the watch, and whether the battery will need to be replaced after a few years. Also, ask yourself if you need the more expensive version with cellular connectivity (LTE), since that requires a separate subscription with your carrier.
By brand: what should you look for?
Not sure which brand to choose yet? Then check out all smartwatches or the more affordable fitness trackers.
- Apple: can only be used with an iPhone. As soon as a new Series is released, the price of the previous one drops significantly.
- Samsung: requires an Android phone. The models come in various case sizes, so make sure to choose one that fits your wrist circumference.
- Garmin: sports watches with battery life ranging from days to weeks. They depreciate more slowly, but also last longer.
- Fitbit: the most affordable entry-level option if you mainly want to track steps, heart rate, and sleep.
