With the Galaxy Watch 8, the difference is quite noticeable. The 40mm has a 1.3-inch screen, while the 44mm has a 1.5-inch screen: on the smaller case, you see noticeably less text per message and have to scroll more often. The battery capacity is 325 mAh versus 435 mAh—about a quarter less—which means you’ll need to charge it more often. On the other hand, the 40mm weighs 30 grams and the 44mm weighs 34 grams; you’ll notice this most when you sleep with the watch on.

With the Galaxy Watch 9, that gap has narrowed: the 40mm model now has a 390 mAh battery, compared to 325 mAh for the 40mm Watch 8. If you want a small watch and as few charging sessions as possible, that’s the main reason to pay for the latest generation rather than a discounted previous model.

When You’re Better Off Choosing the 44mm

Go for the larger size if you mainly use the watch to read and reply to messages, if you want to see your pace and heart rate at a glance while running or cycling, or if you need glasses to read small text.
