What should you look for in tablet deals?
Don't focus on the discount percentage; instead, look at the price you're paying today. Stores often calculate their discount based on the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, and after the first few months, almost no one pays that price anymore. In the overview above, you can see the current prices from each store side by side, so you can see for yourself what a tablet actually costs.
What does a “starting at” price actually mean?
A crossed-out “starting at” price is usually the manufacturer’s suggested retail price or the introductory price—not the amount the store charged last week. If a store in the EU announces a price reduction, it must include the lowest price from the previous 30 days. If only a suggested retail price is crossed out, that discount doesn’t mean much. It’s better to compare it with what other stores are charging at the same time.
When do tablet prices drop?
Tablets are most expensive around their launch and then gradually drop in price. The biggest price drops occur at three times: as soon as the successor model is announced, during the Black Friday sales weeks in November, and when stores clear out their inventory at the end of a quarter. As a result, a tablet from the previous generation is often the smartest buy: in everyday use, you’ll hardly notice a difference from the latest model, but the price difference is significant.
Where discounts are the deepest
Not every brand adjusts its prices at the same pace. That determines whether you’re better off waiting or striking right away.
- Apple iPads: hold their value for a long time, but older generations remain available for years and are then significantly cheaper than the latest model.
- Samsung tablets: fall somewhere in between, with regular deep discounts and bundles that include a keyboard cover or earbuds.
- Android tablets: drop in price the fastest and are already cheaper when new, but check how long the manufacturer promises to provide updates.
Buy now or wait a little longer?
A deal is only a deal if the tablet also suits your needs. So first figure out if you need a larger screen, more storage, or mobile internet, and then filter by price.
Buy now if your current tablet is broken, or if the model you want has been on the market for a while. The price will have dropped significantly by then, and waiting any longer won’t save you much.
Wait a little longer if the successor is expected within a few weeks. Not so much for that new model, but because the current generation will then drop in price.
Don’t forget the additional costs
A low tablet price doesn’t tell the whole story. Factor in the accessories you’ll need anyway: a case, and if you’re drawing or typing, a stylus or keyboard. Together, those can easily cost more than the amount you save on the tablet itself. When looking at cheap deals, also pay attention to storage space, because the entry-level model with the least storage is usually the one on sale.
