Motorola edge product details

The Motorola edge is a fresh appearance from the new high-end edge series. With this still young series Motorola tries to combine new techniques with a premium housing and a competitive price. Whether that is successful, we are going to find out for you here. However, if we look purely at the appearance, it seems to have worked out well.

Endless display

Motorola is a veteran in the smartphone industry and has more than earned their spurs. It is now in the hands of Chinese Lenovo and we have seen series coming and going over the years. With the edge series, Motorola is finally back in the upper segment. In addition to this edge, Motorola also presented the even more extensive edge+ but unfortunately it is not available everywhere. As far as that's concerned, this edge is the always available entry-level model. Although the term 'entry' does not really do justice to the edge. You can see that right away on the screen. This so-called Endless Edge screen of 6.7 inches large curls around the sides and therefore gives an almost infinite effect. The screen is smooth thanks to the high 90Hz refresh rate and color reproduction is high thanks to HDR10+ support.

Ready for the future

Besides a good image, the edge also has good sound. On either side are speakers for true stereo sound. The sound can also be remarkably loud. Much louder than usual with smartphones but whether your neighbors are so happy. You take the Motorola edge also effortlessly on the road. It has 5G support so you can also use high-speed Internet on the go. Unfortunately, the edge only supports the slightly slower sub6G. The 4500 mAh battery ensures that it lasts for 2 days at average use. Charging is via an 18 Watt TurboPower quick charger. Motorola still lags behind its competitors who often offer 25W or higher. Wireless charging is unfortunately not available.

Main Motorola edge specifications

  • 6.7 inch Endless Edge display with OLED panel at 90Hz
  • Premium housing made by Gorilla Glass 5 at the front, plastic at the back and 6000 series aluminum in between
  • 64+16+8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, macro and 2x telephoto zoom
  • 25MP selfie camera in small punch-hole with smile timer and gesture selfie
  • Snapdragon 765G processor with 6GB of RAM memory
  • 128GB built-in memory, expandable to 1TB
  • Come with fairly stock and thus fast Android 10 version
  • 5G support (Sub6 support only)
  • 4500 mAh battery with long battery life and 18W fast charging

Performance takes a step back

Although Motorola positions the edge as a flagship, it is not equipped with a Snapdragon 800 series processor that is typically used for that purpose. Instead we find a Snapdragon 765G processor. It is a very capable and powerful chipset but not the fastest of the fastest. You can find it in the edge+, but that makes it much more expensive. The edge has 4 cameras on the back; a 64MP main camera with f/1.8 lens, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens with 117° angle of view and macro capabilities and finally an 8MP telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom. The fourth camera is more of a sensor; the ToF depth sensor. There is no optical image stabilization, which sometimes makes shooting sharp photos a bit tricky, especially when zooming in.

Pro and cons Motorola edge

  • Striking appearance
  • Premium & smooth screen
  • 2 days of battery life
  • Stereo & headphone port
  • Not waterproof, but water-repellent
