iPhone Duo Official: From iPhone to Almost-iPad for €2,339

As expected, Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, unveiled the first foldable iPhone. As a last-minute rumor had predicted, we are calling it the iPhone Duo. The price was also correctly predicted at $1,999, with availability in late October. The price in euros has also been announced: €2,339.

Since Apple is entering the foldable market relatively late, we have seen much of this before—right down to the design of the iPhone Duo. It bears a strong resemblance to the recently announced Xiaomi 18 Fold, with sharply rounded corners and an asymmetrical outer screen. But there were also some surprises.

Under-display selfie camera, where Samsung previously stepped away

Apple has integrated a selfie camera beneath the screen, a feature Samsung previously abandoned in its Z Fold series. The South Koreans did not do that without reason, so we are curious to see what solutions Apple has devised to improve image quality, for example.

From 5.4 inches closed to 7.6 inches open

The outer screen measures 5.4 inches and looks wider than previous iPhones. Apple makes smart use of that extra screen space by moving the control buttons from the bottom to the right. As a result, the iOS interface looks similar to other iPhones.

When folded, you use the 5.4-inch outer screen; when unfolded, the 7.6-inch inner screen

Open the iPhone Duo and a 7.6-inch screen emerges. That is 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max offers and even 80% more than the iPhone 18 Pro. A top layer with a nano-texture finish is designed to ensure a more durable screen that is less prone to scratches. Apple is so confident in this that it will introduce support for the Apple Pencil later this year—a first for an iPhone.

The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, which you can set up for multiple fingers—ideal if you often hold your foldable iPhone in different ways. There are two cameras on the back: a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera. You can zoom using the main sensor with a quality equivalent to 2x optical zoom.

The iPhone Duo derives its performance from the Apple A20 Pro chip, which is also found in the iPhone 18 Pro models. This 2-nanometer processor features improved thermal management solutions, allowing the iPhone Duo to deliver high performance for up to 35% longer than the iPhone 17 Pro could.

Two batteries for 31 hours of video

To address battery concerns, Apple has incorporated two batteries—one in each section. While more foldable manufacturers are now doing this, Apple claims a battery life of 24 hours and even 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen. Those who mainly use the outer screen should be able to get up to 44 hours of video playback. According to Apple, you can charge it to half capacity in 20 minutes, and a mere 5 minutes on the charger gives your iPhone Duo 5 extra hours of viewing time.

Preorder iPhone Duo starting October 16 for €2339

You will have to be patient for a little while longer to order the Apple iPhone Duo: you can preorder it starting October 16, and units will ship on October 23. In the Netherlands, the entry-level model with 256GB costs €2339, while Americans pay $1999. For 512GB, Apple charges €2589; 1TB costs €3089; and the top-of-the-line 2TB model is listed at €3839. That is not cheap: a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is currently available starting at around €1519.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold, which the Duo closely resembles, is currently only available in China. We will find out whether Apple justifies that price difference with its inner display and battery life as soon as we get our hands on the iPhone Duo ourselves.
