CAD drawing shows Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: possibly with S Pen support again

The first schematic of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been released. Notably, the foldable phone will be slightly thicker. While Samsung focused on making the Fold 7 as thin as possible, the extra thickness of the Fold 8 may be for a good reason.

To the untrained eye, the Fold 8 closely resembles the current Fold 7. Roughly the same dimensions, the same aspect ratio and the same camera module. It adds 0.1 millimeter in thickness. This extra space will be used for a larger 5000 mAh battery and possibly the reintroduction of S Pen support.

The exact specifications are not in yet, so we must remain cautious. But if we are to believe Android Headlines, which first published these CAD drawings, then this is the complete list of Fold 8 specs:

Unfolded158.4 x 143.2 x 4.5 mm
Folded158.4 x 72.8 x 9 mm
Display6.5-inch outside, 8-inch inside
Cameras200 + 50 + 10MP
Battery5000 mAh + 45W fast charging ~25W wired
ProcessorSnapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy
RAM12 / 16 GB
Storage256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB

Samsung previously scrapped S Pen support on the Fold 7 to make the device as compact as possible. That came after many Chinese brands came out with much thinner foldables forcing Samsung to go down that same path. So that compromise may be reversed this year. Whether this is because Samsung will finally adopt a silicon-carbon battery, known for their higher energy density in a more compact size, is still unclear.

Those who had counted on more of a difference need not be immediately disappointed. In addition to the Fold 8 and Flip 8, a third foldable from Samsung is expected this year: an extra-wide version of the Fold called the Galaxy Wide. Samsung also had the TriFold in its lineup for some time but it has since gone off sale. Samsung produced few units, but they sold very quickly. Whether the device will get a successor remains to be seen.
