What should you look for in an Honor Magic Pro?
When you buy a Magic Pro, you’re mainly buying the camera. In this series, Honor features the most powerful telephoto lens and the fastest Qualcomm chip currently available. For example, the Magic8 Pro features a 200-megapixel telephoto lens with 3.7x optical zoom, alongside a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, all on a 6.71-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Optical zoom is what really sets it apart
The telephoto lens is what distinguishes the Magic Pro from the rest of the lineup. With 3.7x optical zoom, you can bring a face or a detail closer without the photo becoming blurry; digital zoom only enlarges the pixels. Keep in mind, though, that in low light, a telephoto lens like this performs worse than the main camera. Indoors and at night, the zoom often falls back on a cropped image from the main camera, so you won’t see much of that advantage.
The European version is not the same as the Chinese one
Honor is launching the Magic Pro first in China and only later in Europe, sometimes with modified hardware. The Magic8 Pro in Europe has a 6270 mAh battery, compared to 7200 mAh in the Chinese version. Same name, different hardware. On the other hand, charging is lightning-fast: 100 watts via cable and 80 watts wirelessly. So be sure to compare the specifications on the Dutch product page rather than relying on a review from another country.
It pays to wait: the price is dropping rapidly
A new Magic Pro costs around 1,299 euros at launch. The Magic8 Pro started at that price, with a pre-order price of 1,099 euros. Honor’s flagship models drop in price quickly afterward: the Magic7 Pro went from 1,299 euros to about 699 euros. If you’re not in a hurry, you can buy the previous generation for roughly half the price and, in practice, sacrifice very little.
Pro, foldable, or more affordable?
The Magic Pro isn’t the logical choice for everyone. These four options are the most obvious.
- Current generation: the Magic8 line is the latest Magic generation, including a more affordable Lite model.
- Foldable: the Magic V-foldables unfold to a screen size of nearly 8 inches, but are significantly more expensive.
- More affordable: The N-series runs on the same software and offers a great everyday camera at a fraction of the price.
