What should you look for in a phone under 100 euros?
In 2026, for 100 euros, you can buy a full-featured Android smartphone that often comes with a 50MP camera, a smooth 90 or 120Hz display, and a battery of 5000 mAh or more. Full-featured Android is the standard
Smartphones under 100 euros now run full Android, with access to all apps in the Google Play Store. You’ll only find the stripped-down Android (Go Edition) on the very cheapest devices. What you do sacrifice in this price range: processing power (heavy games may stutter), charging speed, and extras like wireless charging. For making calls, messaging, social media, and taking photos in daylight, that’s not a problem.
Five years of updates are now mandatory
As of June 20, 2025, new smartphones in the EU must receive at least five years of operating system and security updates, and every device must carry an energy label with a repairability score (EU regulation). So “cheap” no longer automatically means “quickly obsolete.” Just be careful with models that were released before that date: the requirement doesn’t apply to them. Prefer just calling and texting?
Are you looking for a simple phone without distractions, or a backup device for vacation or a festival? For just a few tens, you can buy a dumbphone (for calls and texts only) or a feature phone (with a few extra features). The battery on such a device lasts anywhere from a few days to a week.
Older top-of-the-line model now on sale
In addition to a new budget phone, it’s worth looking at an older model that has dropped in price: mid-range phones from two years ago regularly drop to around 100 euros and offer a faster processor and better camera. Refurbished phones are also worth considering: professionally inspected devices that were much more expensive when new.
