Which iPhone 17 is right for you?

The series includes five models that share many features on paper, but are designed for very different users in practice. You only need to consider three things: how important the camera is to you, what size you want in your hand, and how much you’re willing to spend.

How do the iPhone 17 models really differ?

      • iPhone 17: the all-rounder: 6.3-inch screen with a smooth refresh rate (120Hz), dual 48MP camera, and the best balance in the series.
      • iPhone 17e: the entry-level model: 6.1-inch, standard display (60Hz), and a single camera lens—more than enough for those who mainly text, browse the web, and take snapshots.
      • iPhone Air: by far the thinnest and lightest in the series (5.6 mm, 165 grams) with a large 6.5-inch display; in exchange, you sacrifice battery life and get a single camera lens.
      • iPhone 17 Pro: three 48MP cameras with a telephoto lens, the fastest chip, and an aluminum unibody design.
      • iPhone 17 Pro Max: the same Pro technology in the largest size, with the most space for the battery.

What you don’t need to worry about: every model has a 48MP main camera, a chip from the A19 family, USB-C, MagSafe, and iOS updates through at least 2030 (at Apple, that’s a minimum—it’s usually longer). So you can’t go wrong there; the real decision comes down to camera versatility, size, and display.

iPhone 17 series or the latest generation?

Choosing an older series is often the smart move: after a successor is released, prices typically drop, while the devices continue to receive the same iOS updates as the latest models for years to come. If you absolutely want the very latest technology, check out the iPhone 18 series; if you’re mainly looking for great value for your money, then the 17 series is exactly where you need to be. Want an even better deal? Then check out the refurbished iPhones.
