What's new in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 series?
Xiaomi announced the series on August 27, 2026. The series consists of four devices: the Redmi Note 17, the Redmi Note 17 5G, the Redmi Note 17 Pro, and the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. All four feature a 120Hz AMOLED display and a battery with a capacity of at least 7,700 mAh—even the entry-level model. That capacity fits into a standard chassis thanks to silicon-carbon (Si-C) technology, which allows more energy to be stored in the same space. Xiaomi applies this technology across the entire lineup.
How the four models differ
The display, battery, charging speed, and camera set them apart. Pay special attention to the first two models, as they feature the most significant difference—one that’s easy to overlook.
- Redmi Note 17: 6.99-inch AMOLED up to 1800 nits, 7700 mAh, and 45-watt charging. The largest screen in the series, with a 50MP main camera but no ultra-wide-angle lens. Note: this model does not support 5G.
- Redmi Note 17 5G: identical to the base model in terms of screen, battery, and camera, but with 5G. On the other hand, this model uses a different processor than the base model.
- Redmi Note 17 Pro: 6.83-inch AMOLED up to 3,500 nits, 8,340 mAh, and 67-watt charging. Adds an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and features IP68 certification.
- Redmi Note 17 Pro Max: Same display and protection as the Pro, but with a 9,210 mAh battery, 100-watt charging, and a 32MP selfie camera. The top model in the series.
The two entry-level models have IP65 certification. Only the Pro and Pro Max feature Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front. IP65 means protection against splashes and rain; IP68 means the device can also be briefly submerged in water. You’ll notice the difference in brightness especially outdoors: with 3500 nits, the screen of the Pro models remains readable even in bright sunlight.
Note: “Max” refers to the battery, not the size
For most manufacturers, the Max model is also the largest device. Not here. The Redmi Note 17 and the Redmi Note 17 5G actually have the largest screen at 6.99 inches, while the Pro and Pro Max have 6.83-inch screens. In this series, “Max” primarily refers to the battery, not the screen size. If you’re mainly looking for a large screen, check out the Redmi Note 17 or the Redmi Note 17 5G. If you also want 5G, be sure to choose the 5G version.
10,000 mAh outside Europe, 9,210 mAh here
The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is released in most parts of the world with a 10,000 mAh battery. Europe is the exception: here, the device has a 9,210 mAh battery. Xiaomi has not provided an explanation for this. While 9,210 mAh is still a generous capacity, it’s good to know that European buyers get less than buyers in the rest of the world.
What you’re giving up with this series
Processing power. Even the top model runs on a mid-range chip, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5. Daily use is smooth, but for the most demanding games, you’ll need to lower the graphics settings. When it comes to the camera, there’s no dedicated telephoto lens across the entire lineup, so zooming is done digitally. Charging time is also worth noting: the two entry-level models charge at 45 watts despite having a 7,700 mAh battery, so a full charge clearly takes longer than with the Pro Max, which charges at 100 watts. And the series is heavy: the Redmi Note 17 and the Redmi Note 17 5G weigh around 224 grams. You choose this series for battery life and the display, not for speed or zoom range.
Redmi Note 17 or something else?
If you’re sticking with Xiaomi’s lineup, these are the logical next steps.
- Redmi Note series: all generations of the Redmi Note side by side, which is handy for comparing this generation with the previous one.
- Redmi series: the simpler base line, with a more basic display and a smaller battery than the Note.
- Xiaomi lineup: the full range, including models above the Note line.
