Apple AirTag 2 official: 50% louder and longer search range

Apple has released an updated version of AirTag. This keyfinder retains the same round design and, like its predecessor, is available in only one color: white. But it does two things much better.

The main improvements of the AirTag 2 are the more powerful speaker and longer range. Apple claims 50% more sound making it more likely that you will find your keychain. What also helps with this is that the area in which the tracker is found has increased 1.5x.

New generation AirTag looks the same, is considerably louder

This is thanks to second-generation Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology. Anyone who opens the Find My app on their iPhone or Apple Watch will see exactly which direction the AirTag 2 is in. And if for some reason the new AirTag is too far away, other iPhone users will automatically help find it thanks to the Find My network. So with 1 billion active users, there is always someone nearby.

A reassurance for users: the AirTag 2 still runs on a replaceable CR2032 button cell battery. Whether the updated AirTag, like its predecessor, will last a year on a single battery remains unclear. There is nothing about this in the press release.

Now to order

Apple introduced the AirTag in 2021 and others have since followed with similar products. For example, Google launched the Find My Device network for Android, supporting trackers from Chipolo and Motorola. Still, the AirTag's seamless integration for iPhone users remains the deciding factor.

You don't have to worry about privacy, according to Apple. When an AirTag unintentionally travels with you, you will be notified whether you have an iPhone or Android smartphone. The renewed AirTag is available starting today for a cost of €35 or €119 for a 4pack. Those who order the keychains from Apple can have them inscribed. This makes them a lot more personal.
