MWC 2009: Acer tries to renew smartphones

Ever since the take-over of E-ten Acer is also aiming at smartphones. The brand presented three new devices at the MWC in Barcelona; the F900, M900 and X960.

Acer really tried to let us know that they have produced three new devices. The result is somewhat disappointing, mainly because technologically they didn't change that much. No, the innovative aspect is the way you use the Windows Phones.

Acer F900

The F900 is a new touchscreen phone with a large 3.8 inch display (800 x 480 pixels). Besides UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA the device also has a virtual keyboard to type texts easily.

The main element of the F900 is its home-screen with shortcuts to the most important applications. The F900 shows a desk with items that are shortcuts of often used applications. For instance, with one click on the window you open the weather application.

More applications can be shown by 'moving' the desk by one sweep over the screen. It looks interesting, but we doubt whether this adds value to the device. You can change the desk into a more simple menu by turning the device on its side.

Acer M900

Do you like the F900 but do you miss a full QWERTY keyboard? In that case the M900 is perhaps more suitable for you. You get a 5 megapixel camera and a fingerprint recognition that can also be used as a 5 way directional key.

Acer X960

The X960 is the third device Acer brought to the MWC; a multi-purpose GPS smartphone. And again with a touchscreen; 2.8 inch. The display has 640 x 480 pixels. The device has the same desk widget with short cuts.

Acer DX900

Acer did also transform the E-ten Glofiish DX900 into the Acer DX900. But this isn't really a news fact, because the end product actually remained the same.
