Sony Japan sent invitations for a press event on Friday, May 17, 2024. The event will start at 7 p.m. local time and last until 9:30 p.m. That's pretty long for a phone launch. What will Sony spend two and a half hours talking all about?
According to the schedule, a presentation will be held between 19:00 and 19:30. After that, there will be time to experience products during a hands-on. This hands-on takes two hours in total. Half an hour is enough to announce a new mobile. We are putting our money for now on the Xperia 1 VI.
Xperia 1 VI renders
Renders of that new device recently appeared at Android Headlines. That device does not differ much from the Xperia 1 V. For example, it still appears to have a 6.5-inch screen, a triple camera system, and, as a major exception to the rule nowadays, a 3.5mm headphone port.
New aspect ratio
Yet Sony seems to be making one big difference. For years, the company opted for an unusual 21:9 aspect ratio. That always made the Xperia phone look somewhat elongated and narrow. For 2024, Sony seems to be opting for a more common 19.5:9 ratio, which automatically makes the phone a bit wider.
Any more Xperia phones expected?
Should Sony indeed announce the Xperia 1 VI during this Special Event, then we can look forward to the Xperia 5 VI after that. Sony traditionally presents this phone in the fall. The Xperia 10 VI is expected earlier, though, possibly around the launch of the Xperia 1 VI.
