One of two new smartphones that is sold in 2012, will be Google Android powered. Researching institute Gartner draws this conclusions after examining the smartphone market.
The growth of Android is forecast to be at the expense of most other mobile operating systems. Symbian is the most important loser, but the operating system of the BlackBerry also loses market share. Because the overall market continues to grow, only Symbian is suffering losses in absolute numbers. In 2010 296 million smartphones were sold worldwide. In 2012, there will be 630 million smartphones sales. Gartner expects that over one billion smartphones will be sold by 2015.
Except Android, IOS and Windows 7 Phone are also gaining market share, allthough the increase for these firms will be smaller, according to the researchers. A striking prediction is that Symbian has virtually ceased to be sold in 2015. Given the plans of Nokia Phone with Windows 7, this seems to be a safe prediction.
