HMD has announced the already mentioned Barbie Phone. Over a year after the release of the Barbie movie, with accompanying hype, this phone seems richly late. Not only that, it looks very similar to an existing Nokia flip phone.
Of course, the HMD Barbie Phone is cloaked in a striking pink color called Power Pink. Not only does the phone look very much like the Nokia 2660 Flip, especially its pink variant, the specifications are almost identical. Only the dated micro-USB port has been replaced by the modern USB-C.
HMD portrays the Barbie Phone as an anti-smartphone. You won't find social media on it, and it also lacks a selfie camera. You can make a call, send a text message and, above all, enjoy life around you. Back to simpler times, in other words.
All Barbie
The HMD Barbie Phone is a so-called flip phone with a numeric keypad inside, a 2.8-inch color screen and an awful lot of references to Barbie. For example, there are luminous hearts and flamingos in the keypad, the phone greets you with "Hi Barbie" when you turn it on, and missed calls are announced by Ken's voice.
With Barbie accessories
A charger does not come with the device but a set of stickers, crystals and a Barbie-style phone cord do. The HMD Barbie phone is in stores from today and costs a hefty €129.99. By comparison; the pink 2260 Flip currently costs €59.99. So you must be a big Barbie fan to justify the price.
