Fairphone is a Dutch company that has been making fair cell phones from conflict-free materials since 2013. The smartphones are partially modular so parts can be replaced when they break down or when you want to upgrade.
Sustainable design
Fairphone focuses on 4 things; sustainable design, fair materials, good working conditions and reuse & recycling. By designing a phone that is modular, self-repairable and long-lasting, you put minimal strain on the environment.
Fair materials
Cell phones contain many different materials, from common to more rare. The latter include tantalum, tungsten, gold, cobalt, gallium and indium. Most of these come from mines in conflict zones or where working conditions are not optimal or even pose health risks. Fairphone is working with The Dragonfly Initiative to map the supply chain of all 38 materials from which the Fairphone 2 is made and suggest areas for improvement.
