Which new Samsung is right for you?

Just because a Samsung phone is new doesn’t guarantee it’s the best device for your situation. The manufacturer updates its series at different times throughout the year, and each series targets a different type of user. If you know the release schedule, you’ll know whether the phone you’re considering has just been released or will be replaced in a few months.

How do the latest Samsung phones really differ?

  • Galaxy S: the top-of-the-line models with the fastest chip, the best cameras with zoom, and the latest Galaxy AI features; the Ultra adds the S Pen and the largest screen.
  • Galaxy A: the mid-range series with a large battery, a good screen, and usually a water-resistant design—all for a fraction of the price of an S model.
  • Galaxy Z Flip: a flip phone that fits in any pants pocket when folded, with an outer screen for messages and selfies.
  • Galaxy Z Fold: a phone that unfolds into a small tablet, for those who read a lot, multitask, or watch videos.

The software is the same story with every new Samsung: the latest version of One UI, Galaxy AI, and a multi-year update policy, plus the same migration app and integration with Galaxy watches and earbuds. So you don’t need to base your choice on that. What you should base your choice on: the form factor (flat or foldable), the amount you’re willing to spend, and whether you’ll actually use the extra camera and processing power of a top-of-the-line model in everyday use.

When does Samsung release new phones?

Samsung has maintained a consistent release schedule for its flagship models and foldables for years. It unveils its flagship devices—the Galaxy S series and the Z Fold and Z Flip—at its own event, Galaxy Unpacked, which takes place twice a year and can be watched live; the A series and other models are released without a show, via a press release, and appear throughout the year. This allows you to predict fairly accurately whether the device you’re looking at will remain “the newest” for much longer.

In practical terms, this means: if you’re looking for a new S model in December, its successor will be in stores within a few months. Buying a foldable in the fall, on the other hand, is a good time: the summer generation has just been released, and prices are starting to drop. The S FE isn’t a bargain at launch: for the first few months, the starting price is close to that of the standard S model from the same year, and only later does it drop to the price point the FE is intended for. With an A-model, you don’t look at the calendar but at the number: the first digit indicates the device’s class, and a higher second digit signifies a newer model year of the same model.

New or just not the newest anymore?

A previous-generation Samsung is usually the smarter buy if the upgrades are mainly in the chip and not in the screen, camera, or battery. That has been the case more often than not in recent generations, even though the suggested retail price actually went up at launch: both the Galaxy S26 series and the A57 and A37 hit the market at a higher price than their predecessors. There is one caveat, however: the update period starts from the release date, so a device from last year will receive updates for a total of one year less than the new model. Weigh that against the price difference, which often amounts to several hundred euros immediately after a launch. You can find previous generations under all Samsung phones; devices that Samsung has announced but isn’t shipping yet are listed under upcoming phones.
