During Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S24 series, which consists of the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. Although these are new phones with new hardware, the unveiling mainly revolved around something else—namely, the intelligent features of Galaxy AI.
Much of the S24 series had been leaked beforehand. We were, therefore, particularly interested in the hands-on demonstrations during the presentation. And to our surprise, we were not disappointed.
Samsung Galaxy S24
But first, the phones themselves. The Galaxy S24 is a 6.2-inch smartphone. As such, it has a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, although the dimensions hardly differ. The camera system comprises a 50+12+10MP system with a 120° ultra-wide angle and 3x optical zoom. The battery measures 4000mAh and can be charged quickly with 25W. Available memory versions are 128, 256, and 512GB; you always get 8GB of RAM.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus
Moving on to the S24+. The screen measures 6.7 inches, again 0.1 inches more than last year. The camera system is similar to the S24, but the RAM is larger at 12GB. There are models with 256GB and 512GB of storage memory. The battery has a capacity of 4900mAh, and charging can be done with up to 45W.
Exynos processor
Without explicitly mentioning it, both the S24 and S24+ are powered by an Exynos processor. According to Samsung, the CPU performs 20% better, the GPU is 30% better, and the NPU is 41% better. The latter is responsible for the many AI features that Samsung has equipped the S24 series. Those who necessarily want a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm should head over to the S24 Ultra.
Galaxy AI
These AI features are part of what Samsung calls "Galaxy AI." One example is a real-time translation of speech or text into another language. That works both ways. You'll find the feature in the Dialer app, thus making it possible to call someone in a language you don't understand.
Translation also works in a separate app, which is handy during a vacation, and in the Samsung keyboard and chat apps. Chatting with someone whose language you don't speak is thus no longer an obstacle. Remarkably, the feature also comes to Google Messages, making the collaboration with Google even closer.
The translation feature currently works with 13 languages, including English, French, German, Polish, Italian and Portuguese. Dutch is not among them for now.
Tougher Armor Aluminum
The Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus are made of sturdier Armor Aluminum and available in four colors. Samsung took inspiration from nature for the colors and settled with Onyx Black, Cobalt Violet, Amber Yellow, and Marble Gray. Both the S24 and S24+ are available in this color palette.
Prices start at €899 for the Galaxy S24 with 128GB of storage and €1149 for the Galaxy S24+ with 256GB of storage. Ordering is possible as early as Wednesday, Jan. 17. Shipments start Jan. 31.
