Xiaomi 14 Ultra with Leica cam shakes up high-end segment

With the Xiaomi 14 Ultra announcement, Samsung and Apple are finally getting some competition in the high-end segment. Even with its impressive Leica camera, the device will probably not take a significant market share from its competitors, but it offers an exciting alternative.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra hands-on picture

Xiaomi applies its cameras in a circular camera module that covers much of the back of the 14 Ultra. The setup Xiaomi employs is;

  • 50MP 1-inch main camera with variable f/1.63-f/4.0 lens
  • 50MP ultra-wide-angle with f/1.8 lens
  • 50MP 3x zoom camera with f/1.8 lens
  • 50MP 5x zoom camera with f/2.5 lens

This composition is suspiciously similar to what Samsung is doing with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung is gambling on more megapixels, while Xiaomi has to rely on the large size of the sensor. We are therefore very curious to see a field test between these two phones.

Help from Leica

Xiaomi had help from Leica in developing the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Therefore, we take into account true-to-life colors and realistic shots. In any case, the sample photos sent by Xiaomi with the press release look promising.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra specifications

The screen measures a spacious 6.73 inches and features a 2K resolution of 3200 by 1440 pixels with a maximum brightness of 3000 nits. Xiaomi has further equipped the 14 Ultra with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the most powerful chipset Qualcomm currently offers. This chip can use as much as 16GB of RAM.

We are still waiting for the actual launch of the device before we can compare it to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. But on paper, it all looks good.
