Mysterious news fuels rumors of new BlackBerry phone

Last weekend, a mysterious post appeared on Reddit hinting at a return of the BlackBerry Classic, but with Android 15. What's going on here?

The post appeared on r/blackberry by a user named u/coldheartedsigma. While this user has been around for almost two years, he or she has not posted before, until this weekend. According to him or her, an English company is currently seeking capital to launch a new BlackBerry phone.

This phone would have at least the following features:

  • 5G
  • AMOLED display
  • 12GB of RAM and 256/512GB of storage
  • Android 15
  • Generative AI
  • Capacitive keyboard

Moreover, there are said to be several models in the pipeline but due to an NDA, more cannot be told about them. But an image was apparently allowed to be shared, if heavily edited.

What are we to make of all this? First of all, Canada's BlackBerry still exists but they no longer make phones. The most recently released BlackBerry phones were made under license by other companies; TCL and BB Merah Putih. So it is not entirely inconceivable that another company will launch BlackBerry phones.

Too good to be true?

But whether that has any chance of success we wonder. There is a reason why phones with physical keyboards no longer exist. The advent of large touchscreens made the technology obsolete. And even a "capacitive keyboard" and "generative AI" won't change that. But we like to be surprised and should new evidence emerge we will bring it here.
