MeeGo runs on handset for the first time


Nokia and Intel show the world their new mobile MeeGo for the first time running on a mobile phone. The developers show working version of the OS in a Youtube video. MeeGo is opensource and uses the Linux kernel.

The new OS is the result of the merge of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo. Both are Linux-based operating systems for mobile devices. The chip maker and the phone manufacturer announced their partnership at the Mobile World Congress, this February.

Lost market share

The OS should help Nokia to regain it's position on the smart phone market. After the advent of the iPhone and Android, the Finnish company lost much of its smart phone market share. Intel is not yet active in in mobile telephony, but want to enter the smart phone chips market. Nokia's new smart phone, N9, is said to be the first phone that will be sold running MeeGo

The pre-alpha version of MeeGo is available for download at the website of the project. The developers installed the latest release on a Nokia N900, and videotaped it. The video shows the basic functions of the operating system:
