NXP lowers NFC expectations

NXP, a company that plays an important role in the market for Near Field Communication chips (NFC), has lowered its expectations of the number of devices with NFC at the end of the year.

The predictions Richard Clemmer, the director of the company, previously expressed appear to have been too enthusiastic. He expected that by the end of 2011 40 to 1000 million phones with NFC would have been sold in the market would be. NXP must now recognize that the recent evolution of the smartphone market dictates that the lowest expectation of 40 million is a more realistic figure.

The breakthrough of NFC still isn’t coming. NFC is mainly tought to be usefull in the area of payments, but the technique can also be used to quickly exchange contact information between two mobile phone. NXP is a leading creator of chips that make this technique possible. The company, headquartered in The Netherlands, employs 40,000 people.
