Apple finally gives iPhone 17 120Hz screen it deserves
It's unfortunate that this is the headline, but why did it take 18 years? While the rest of the world has been enjoying fluid playback for almost a decade now, Apple is finally following suit with its base iPhone costing almost a thousand euros. It's a shame because there's so much more to say about the iPhone 17.
Apple announced the iPhone 17 during its annual Keynote, along with the iPhone 17 Pro and the all-new iPhone Air. The announcement had quite a few surprises, including a new processor, more storage memory and an unchanged starting price.
As in previous years, the base iPhone 17 has a dual camera on the back placed one above the other. It is still a 48MP Dual Fusion camera with a 2x optical zoom lens in addition to a wide-angle lens that also allows you to take macro shots. The front camera is different, though, and how. Apple not only applies a physically larger and higher 18MP sensor, it is square for the first time.
Center Stage
This feature enables users to take photos at the same resolution in both portrait and landscape modes, regardless of how the device is held. It's a clever principle that will no doubt be emulated. Those who record videos of themselves will notice that the camera follows them and tries to keep them in focus.
In addition to a smoother image, the screen of the iPhone 17 will also be slightly larger. The screen now measures 6.3 inches and has a higher outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. Up front is the new Ceramic Shield 2 that is 3x more scratch resistant. Apple, as mentioned, also finally applies ProMotion in its base iPhone and this can dynamically control screen refresh between 1 and 120Hz depending on what needs to be shown. This will save battery power.
Faster charging
Speaking of battery, Apple promises faster charging with the iPhone 17. For this, a new adapter has been released that can regulate between 40 and 60 watts. Apple claims a half-full battery in 20 minutes, which is about 10 minutes faster than with the iPhone 16 series.
The Apple iPhone 17 comes out in 5 new colors and now starts from 256GB. Still, Apple is keeping the price the same as last year's 128GB. Earlier, it was rumored that Apple would increase the price despite the storage doubling, so in hindsight that turns out not to be true. The can order an iPhone 17 from Friday, September 12, after which the device will be delivered to your home the following week.
