Symbian executive resigns immediately

Lee M. Williams, director of the Symbian Foundation, resigns immediately. His goodbye, off course, has 'personal reasons'. Williams is succeeded by Tim Holbrow, who previously was responsible for finance at the Symbian Foundation.

The Symbian Foundation manages the Symbian OS, that was opensourced in 2008. The idea back then was that multiple manufacturers would contribute code, but it turned out that mainly Nokia is investing in the system, and also the only large phone manufacturer that uses Symbian.

Critique

Symbian is being critcized since the advent of iPhone and Android. The system is said to be old. Bad tongues say the OS is losing the battle with its competitors. The latest release of Symbian, ^3, brought a mayor update, but didn't get Symbian on par with other systems.

The resigning of Williams comes a moth of an exodus of executives at Nokia. Both CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo and Mobile division head Anssi Vanjoki left the building. Alltough Nokia has no direct power in the Symbian Foundation, the Finnish company get put some pressure on Symbian, as it is the largest manufacturer using the OS. Williams'reisging could thus have been happened due to pressure from Nokia. His goodbye means that all executives who where in charge during the development of the Nokia N8 now have been replaced.
