End of the story for the Symbian Foundation?

The Symbian Foundation, an independent organization that manages Symbian, seems to be near its end. The Foundation has to become profitable, otherwise it will be dismantled.

The news follows the resigning of Symbian executive Lee M. Williams and the announcement that Nokia stops developing Symbian^4. Nokia is the only large developer of Symbian phones. Looking at the portfolio of Symbian handsets, only Sharp and Fujitsu have some phones with Symbian as well.

Sony Ericsson and Samsung

Before, also Samsung en Sony Ericsson took part in the development of Symbian. Although both companies are still members of the Symbian Foundation, they've said that they are not planning any new Symbian driven devices for now. Instead, dear are aiming at new Android handsets.

Nokia hoped that the independent status of Symbian would attract more developers outside Nokia. Now that all other large manufacturers have left the building, its about to collapse, and Nokia foresees it. It seems to take control over the foundation, that, although it is indepedent, largely depends on Nokia, its major client.
