Google Pixel 11 may get different modem; why that’s good news for your battery

Google is reportedly looking to switch from Samsung to MediaTek for the modem in future Pixel 11 phones. These would be more power efficient, which is good news for battery life. However, this is not a new rumor.

For years, Google has been using Samsung's Exynos modems for super-fast 5G on the go. They do that very creditably but they do consume a relatively large amount of power. Although the power consumption of the Exynos 5400 and 5400i is considerably lower than its predecessor(s). For the Pixel 11, Google is considering switching to a MediaTek modem; the M90.

Now the same rumor was going around at the time for the Pixel 10 but it ended up coming out with an Exynos modem. So it remains to be seen what turns out to be true of this rumor. By the way, the MediaTek M90 5G modem also supports higher speeds, up to 12 Gbit/s although those speeds are never achieved in practice.

Another interesting fact is that the MediaTek M90 features satellite communications (NTN) and IoT-NTN. The Pixel 10 is also equipped with satellite communications to send emergency messages in places where there is no mobile coverage. You then get the option in the calling app to activate Satellite SOS.

It remains to be seen whether Google will actually put the M90 modem in the Pixel 11 series. One certainty, however, is that the latest Google Pixel series will feature the Tensor G6 chip.
