Soon no more cable with your new mobile too? Sony stops it already

A buyer of the new Sony Xperia 10 VII made a striking discovery in the box. There was no USB cable included. Now we're used to having less and less in a phone box, but not including a charging cable is also new. Is Sony starting a new trend?

Who remembers the times when a new mobile phone came with wired headphones? We haven't seen those for years, and we haven't seen a charger for several years either thanks to Apple. But there was seemingly something else to scrap and that's the USB cable. According to Sony, we have enough of those at home as well, and so from now on, it will be missing as well.

If you buy a Sony Xperia 10 VII at least, because besides some documentation and the device itself, the box is empty. In itself logical, because let's face it, who doesn't have a drawer or box at home with all kinds of cables? Chances are there's a USB cable in there and if not, grab the one from your previous mobile. That saves a lot of cables that will soon be gathering dust anyway, and it helps manufacturers to reduce costs even further.

Do other manufacturers follow?
Because count on other smartphone manufacturers to pay attention to what Sony is doing now. If there is not too much fuss about it, they will soon also abandon the USB cable. Those who do need a new cable for their new mobile should take note; one USB cable is not the other.

Tips for picking a USB cable

For example, if you want to take advantage of the full speed of your charger, your cable must support that. Pay attention to terms like Power Delivery (PD) or Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC). If your phone charges with powers above 50W then your cable must be thick enough. So don't just buy any random cable from AliExpress because there is indeed a danger of overheating, possibly resulting in a fire.

If you want to use your cable to transfer data besides charging, then it gets even more complicated. You then look at the USB version supported. USB 2.0 is slow, 3.1 is a bit faster but 3.2 or even 4.0 is the standard today to quickly transfer data from your mobile to your PC. Also consider the length, 30 centimeters is enough for attached to a power bank but too short for by your bedside.
