AMD joins MeeGo


Chipmanufacturer AMD will help developing MeeGo, a Linux-based operating system for mobile phones and tablets. AMD joins Intel and Nokia, who teamed up to create MeeGo.

The new OS is a merge of Intels MobLin and Maemo by Nokia. Maemo is mostly known for its presence on the N900. Both systems are Limux based for mobile devices. Intel and Nokia announced their cooperation ate the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona.

Common interest

Although AMD and Intel are competitors, the have common interest. Both companies see other take a large marketshare in the smartphone-industry. By actively co-creating MeeGo, Intel and AMD seek to increase their marketshare.

"Built from the ground up for a whole new class of mobile computing devices, MeeGo gives companies like AMD and its partners unlimited opportunities to accelerate innovation for the next generation of computing," says Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "As an existing Linux Foundation member, AMD will be an important and valuable contributor to the MeeGo Project."

First handsets

The only MeeGo device presented yet, is the the WeTab, a tablet designed in Germany. Phones running MeeGo are not available yet. The MeeGo version for phones is still in alpha. The operating system will be ready in 2011. Nokia promised Nokia N900 owners an upgrade.
