Samsung launches 7-year OS updates, starting with Galaxy S24 series

It's getting a lot more interesting to buy a Galaxy phone nowadays. Samsung promises to offer 7 years of security updates and Android upgrades with select Galaxy phones. The first ones to be serviced for that long are the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra.

Samsung matches Google's software update promise, which pledged to release seven years of updates and upgrades for its Pixel line. That Galaxy phones will also be maintained for the same period is good news for the market and the planet. A phone, thus, does not become obsolete when its software support ends.

Seven years of security and OS updates

Samsung begins its pledge of 7 years of software support starting with the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra. The promise includes seven generations of Android OS updates and seven years of security updates. Samsung writes in fine print that it will let availability and timing vary by model and market.

UL ECOLOGO-certified

We don't know exactly which future other Galaxy phones will also get the 7-year promise, but it seems Samsung has only top-of-the-line models in mind for this. These include Galaxy S and Z models. Previously, Samsung had promised to give selected Galaxy models 4-year updates.

Another way Samsung is trying to help the planet is using recycled materials. For example, the S24 series uses recycled cobalt, rare earth elements, steel, and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The S24 Ultra contains at least 50% recycled cobalt and 100% rare earth metals. All devices have UL ECOLOGO certification.
