Nokia E-series, a big step in the enterprise market

Introduced at the end of last year as an attack to Windows Mobile and Blackberry concepts and now tested by NewMobile and PDAtotaal.info. The new E-series are a strong step by Nokia in the enterprise market.

Together with PDAtotaal.info and Robert Harmsen, the only Dutch Symbian goeroe, NewMobile had the opportunity to test the new Nokia E-series. The devices that were shown at the end of last year during the SmartphoneShow in London prove that Nokia is acting strong in the business and enterprise markets.

Off couse there is already a business portofolio from Nokia containing the Series 80 models; 9500, 9300 and 9300i. But the E-series turn into a way of serving the mid-end segment of the business market with the newest devices on basis of the new Symbian v9.1, Series 60 3rd Edition and a big amount of functionalities that cannot be reached by other brands. The new operating system and user interface are a big leap into the future of smartphones and the possibilities that this sort of models can offer.

The business market in which the E-series are placed has grown in the last years. In this market Blackberry models have been the standard in several organisations and email has grown to the standard function on these devices. The major point in this story is the push-email technology, which gives the user the ability to receive mail quick and easy. RIM Blackberry is the marketleader on this part. Nokia has 25%, but that will change after the introduction of these three new devices in the upcoming weeks and months.

Nokia E60

The E60 is E-series member that will be positioned at the business user which has the 6310i now. The device is equipped with a 16 million colour screen and an internal memory of 30 MB. The device feels good and solid. Especially the screen is one of the best we have seen so far. Furthermore the simplicity and nice looks of the device should be emphasized.

Nokia E61

The second model is the new E61, which is a direct copy of the Blackberry concept. The device has a complete keyboard that can be used to write simple messages, a 16 million colour screen and an internal memory of 75 MB. There is no camera on the device, same as for the E60.

The E61 gives everything a current Blackberry user needs. The device feels, calls and is a Blackberry copy. Each time you use it this is the feeling you get. The screen has a special system that will adjust to the surrounding lightintensity. The sensor above the screen (also used for the keyboardlighting) is used for this feature. The other possibilties of the device with the large screen are off course endless.

Nokia E70

The E70 is the last and most special out of the Nokia's kitchen. The unique 2-in-1 keyboard concept is applied to this model and gives the business user the possiblity to use the device in two separate ways. Folded it is a standard model with al the functionalities and in the opened situation the device and full-size keyboard can be used to answer messages. Next to this feature the E70 is equipped with a 260.000 colour screen, 2.0 megapixel camera and an internal memory of 75 MB.

All in 1, that is the E70's story. The device offers all possibilties to the user that wants a normal device and a messaging killer in one package. The screen and resolution are fantastic with respect to the size of the device. The rotating screen and the ability to enter data makes it a compact messaging killer.

Nokia E-series

All models are equipped with the Symbian v9.1 Series 60 operating system and solutions for Blackberry Connect, Nokia Business Center IBM Websphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, 24 Access, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile. These applciations make it possible to synchronise your office data OTA (Over The Air). Besides this Office file readers and editors, UMTS, EDGE, Wlan (b/i/e/g) and VoIP dataconnections are available. Also all E-series models will have support for Microsoft ActiveSync and can be connected to any company networkconcept.

The expectance is that Nokia will do alright regarding these new devices and that more will follow (E50 and E62). The devices shall cost between 350 and 450 Euro and will be available around April/Mei 2006. The E61 will hit the market first, then the E60 and then the E70.
