Windows Mobile news from 3GSM


The last few days the 3GSM World Congress was held in Barcelona. During the event there was an enormeous amount of news that we will share to you the upcoming days with extra videos and photos. Let us first start with Windows Mobile

When we are looking at the amount of Windows Mobile device news which was available the last days then we could make the following short list of new introduced products:

1. Orange shows SPV M600
2. I-mate brings Smartflip and Qtek the 8500
3. HTC introduced the world first smartphone supporting DAB-IP
4. HTC Hermes, successor MDA Vario, SPV M3000 and i-mate JAMIN, leaked
5. Tried out new Palm Treo 700w

1. Orange shows SPV M600

As mentioned before Orange has shown the new SPV M600 and NewMobile had the change to try it. The new device that is the successor of the SPV M500 will be available the upcoming months. Prices are not yet known at this stage.

2. I-mate brings Smartflip and Qtek the 8500

I-mate showed the world there new product, the smartflip. This first ever clamshell product for i-mate consists of several special parts. The device is really slim, has a 2.0 megapixel camera, pretty nice looks (especially the keyboard) and keys dedicated to the MP3 player on the front of the device.

Qtek also showed there version of the new HTC Star Trek. It will be called Qtek 8500.

3. HTC introduced the world first smartphone supporting DAB-IP

HTC, the leading maker of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices, has unveiled the world first smartphone supporting DAB-IP technology together with BT and Virgin Mobile operators at 3GSM Congress. The smartphone is called the Trilogy. It will be used for the new mobile TV service BT Movio.

BT and Virgin Mobile expect to become the first European operators providing digital TV and radio broadcasting for mobile phones. At first Virgin Mobile will provide the service on a limited basis, and later it will offer its subscribers the access to huge digital TV-content and over 350 radio stations. The broadcasting will be done via the existing networks in the UK DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting).

The main specs of the Trilogy:

- Operating system Windows Mobile 5.0
- GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) and GPRS
- 2.2” QVGA LCD (240x320 pixels), 65K colors
- 1.3-megapixel camera
- 128 MB RAM and 64 MB flash memory
- Slot for microSD cards
- Bluetooth 1.2 and USB (battery charging possible)
- Built-in DAB module

4. HTC Hermes, successor MDA Vario, SPV M3000 and i-mate JAMIN, leaked

The web source Pocket PC Italia has published live photos and specs of the upcoming communicator HTC Hermes. We’ve mentioned it time and again. It’s a development of HTC Wizard platform. They are alike in functionality and design. HTC Hermes is a UMTS-version of its predecessor, but it’s slightly massive. The device will be called i-mate JASJAM (where do they find such names).

According to Pocket PC Italia, HTC Hermes has the following specs:

- Operating system Windows Mobile 5.0
- GSM/GPRS and UMTS/HSDPA networks
- Processor Samsung S3C2442 300 MHz
- 64 MB RAM and 128 MB flash-memory
- 2.8” TFT LCD, QVGA (240x320 pixels), 65K colors
- Sliding QWERTY-keyboard
- 2.1-megapixel camera and CIF-camera
- Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0
- Slot for microSD (TransFlash) cards
- Battery capacious of 1350 mAh

5. Palm Treo 700w aan de tand gevoeld

NewMobile has used the new Treo 700w during the event in Barcelona. The new device which looks like a Treo 650 is not running on Palm, but on Windows Mobile 5.0 and will not hit the European market soon. It is only due for the American market.

The device feels good and combines the easy system of the old Treo devices with the options Windows Mobile 5.0 has. All progams will run on the 240 x 240 pixels resolution and new operating system. On the outside you will only find some new dedicated keys for the WM 5.0 platform. Overall it looks the same like a Treo 650.
