Apple has just given us a look into her plans regarding the direction for iPhone and iPod Touch. Next to some evolutionary changes the iPhone OS 4 even brings us some revolutionary changes as well.
Multitasking
New to version 4 are multitasking, a few UI changes and new functionalities. But let's start with multittasking. Apple's got a trick to run applications in the background; just a few common services can run on the background. Some of the are; playing music, VoIP, navigatietion apps and notifications.
In practice this means that for example a musicplayer like Pandora continues to play music even when you go back to the homescreen. Even an application like TomTom can continuously navigate from A to B, when looking a phonenumber in the addressbook. Double click on the homescreen and you get an overview of all running applications.
Folders
Second big changes is the introduction of folders. Within these folders you can store a collection of applications and keep the other 11 pages emptier.
Useful to for instance save your games in one folder. You can even place the folder in the dock.
Unified mail
The iPhone received a lot of criticism for the way it handled e-mail. Each mailbox had its own seperate entry. With Android it is much easier, because it stores different e-mail accounts in one inbox. Apple is taking this up as well and even offers support for multiple exchange accounts. It will eventually be possible to render e-mails as conversation, just as it currently does with text messages.
Social gaming network
Apple is very proud that iPhone and iPod Touch count many games. Om op die trend in te spelen kondigt het een online platform aan waar je scores kunt bijhouden, vrienden kunt uitnodigen en nog meer van wat bijvoorbeeld Microsoft doet met Xbox live.
iBooks
Daarnaast gaat Apple de iPhone met de iPad laten integreren. Er komt een iBooks toepassing zodat je de boeken die je voor je iPad gekocht hebt ook op je iPhone kunt lezen. Er is zelfs gedacht aan synchronisatie van bladwijzers en pagina's. Klinkt leuk, maar zolang we hier nog geen iPad kunnen aanschaffen hebben we daar ook niet zoveel aan.
iAd
Maar Apple stapt ook de online advertentiemarkt binnen. Ontwikkelaars kunnen binnenkort hun klanten bestoken met advertenties binnen hun toepassingen.
Mensen die op advertenties klikken blijven in de applicatie en kunnen op ieder moment terugkeren. Ontwikkelaars die ervan gebruik maken verdienen 60% van de opbrengsten, de rest blijft in Cupertino achter.
Grappig is dan weer wel dat de advertenties interactief zijn. Apple wil in-app advertenties kwalitatiever en minder schreeuwerig maken. Zo kan een advertenties bijvoorbeeld een spelletje of een video bevatten om je kennis te laten maken met producten of diensten.
Beschikbaarheid
Apple zal versie 4 van iPhone OS, waaronder de iPhone en de iPod Touch draaien, vanaf de zomer beschikbaar stellen. Ontwikkelaars krijgen nu al de mogelijkheid aan de slag te gaan met versie 4. Helaas geldt voor iPhone 3G bezitters dat ze niet mogelijkheid krijgen tot multitasking, de hardware trekt dit helaas niet. De iPhone 3GS zal, zoals Apple het zelf zegt "vrijwel alle nieuwe functies ondersteunen". Het bedrijf doelt hier natuurlijk op een nieuwe iPhone die vrijwel zeker rond juni zal worden aangekondigd.
