Production-ready Project Moohan released; Samsung’s first Galaxy XR glasses

Since Apple released the Vision Pro, Samsung has been working on Project Moohan, a pair of mixed reality glasses. Samsung is not doing this alone, they are getting help from Google who is taking care of the software. We already got a demonstration of the glasses in December 2024, but now the glasses seem to be really ready for production.

Indeed, the official product renders and specifications surfaced at AndroidHeadlines. Except for some details, the images are very similar to what Samsung and Google previously showed, so it is unclear why it has taken so long.

Google has created a new Android version specifically for the XR experience; Android XR. That combines the physical world with a virtual one with the help of the necessary AI. Manufacturers can use the platform to create virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality products with it. Samsung is the first with what is currently called Project Moohan.

Does lighter also mean more comfortable?

Samsung is addressing the Apple Vision Pro's biggest complaint; weight. Project Moohan weighs about 100 grams less. Despite that decrease, at 545 grams, the device is still on the heavy side to carry comfortably for long periods of time at the same time. Something that many Vision Pro users also experienced.

Samsung's headset features six cameras up front with two 4K displays inside, one for each eye. Great care has been taken to minimize ambient light coming in. Like Apple, it uses an external battery pack that brings the maximum usage time to 2.5 hours. Operation is done with your hands but there are also controllers with haptic feedback.

Too late?

The question is whether Samsung could not have better spent its time on other things. The Vision Pro is not selling well at all, and according to rumors, Apple has stopped development of a lighter successor. Instead, Apple is said to be working on glasses to beat Meta's Ray-Ban glasses.
