Rovio: Android fragmentation is OK

After Steve Jobs took stand against Android 'fragmentation', multiple app creators replied to his words. Peter Vesterbacka, one of the crearors of Angry Birds, now replies Jobs' critique as well.

Jobs' critique concerns the multitude of mobile phones that run Android. If you make an app, you've got to take care of user with a low budget phone like the LG Optimus One, but with the HTC Desire HD, a handset with a larger screen and a quicker processor as well. An app should run on both these devices, and all in between.

iPhone and Windows Phone 7

The iPhone has the problems as well, but not to the same degree. Developers have to take multiple iPhones in account. Not all consumers have the latest iPhone. The prevent problems, Microsoft has strict rules for the hardware of devices running Windows Phone 7. A WP7-handset should have a 800 x 480 pixels screen and a Gigahertz processor.

Vesterbacka's reply

However, Peter Vesterbacka sees now big issues with Android fragmentation, and he's the man who should know it. Rovio created Angry Birds for almost all mobile platforms, and thus encountered the fragmentation on Android.

"Fragmentation on the device side is not a huge problem, but Steve is absolutely right when he says that there are more challenges for developers when working with Android. But that’s fine, developers will figure out how to work any given ecosystem and as long as it doesn’t cause physical pain, it’s ok;-)."
