Google Pixel 4 product details

The Google Pixel 4 is already the fourth generation of Google's own phones. This is what an Android smartphone should look like according to Google. New this year is a radar with which you can control it by hand gestures and a camera with which you can capture the stars.

Not the best good looking

Of course with a Pixel phone you'll get a good camera but Google will try something different this year. You have to praise them for that because mobile phones look a lot like each other lately. There's still a lot to be said about the elaboration and application, but more about that later. The Pixel 4 has a 5.7 inch screen which is compact for today's standards. The bar underneath the screen at the bottom has disappeared, at the top it's still there. Not much attention has been paid to the design. It is difficult to identify it from a row of phones. There is also little color choice available; black and white.

Google Pixel 4 white overview

Just a very good camera

He doesn't like the look of it so it's time to look at the camera. There the Pixel always knows how to impress. The Pixel 4 doesn't disappoint either. Even with only 2 camera sensors. Still there is the 12.2 megapixel camera, f/1.7 lens, optical and electronic image stabilization. This year he gets help from a 16 megapixel camera with telephoto lens for 2x zoom. It is the first time a Pixel gets a 2nd camera on the back and the choice for a zoom lens is a striking one. Many other manufacturers opt for an ultra-wide-angle lens that in practice is more useful than zoom. Moreover, Google has proven with processing power alone to be able to zoom on the sensor alone. However, we can complain what we want, the fact is that the Pixel shoots 4 studioworthy photos. Even at night thanks to the Night Sight which allows you to take great photos without flash. Even of the stars, something they call 'astrophotography' on Google.

Main Google Pixel 4 specifications

  • Compact 5.7 inch OLED screen with FHD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate
  • 12.2 + 16 MP camera with 2x Super Res Zoom, Night Sight and Astrophotography
  • 8MP selfie camera above the screen with Motion Sense radar user input
  • Stereo speakers
  • IP68 waterproof aluminum body but with relatively fragile coating on the trim
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor at up to 2,84 GHz with 6 GB RAM memory (RAM)
  • Choice of 64 or 128 GB non-expandable memory
  • Questionable battery capacity of 2800 mAh but with 18 Watt fast charge

Motion Sense: big bet

And then back to the beginning. There is still space above the screen, which is used for Motion Sense, among other things. This is a technique for recognizing hand movements. Thanks to radar, these movements are recognized and you can browse through music and mute your alarm clock. Helped by Motion Sense, the Pixel 4 now also supports secure face recognition, even in the dark. Google is doing a little Apple work here because it completely exchanges fingerprint recognition for facial recognition. That will take some getting used to for Pixel fans, but also for Motion Sense. In practice it doesn't add much and then the technique seems like a fair guess. It does leave its mark on the appearance of this Pixel 4 and possible future Pixel 4 fans want to stick to it.

Google launches first beta of Android 11

Android 11 focuses on People, Control and Privacy

Industry news ·

Without a big revelation or an exuberant party, Google released the first public beta of Android 11. Developments in the world didn't allow that. Still, the press release contains enough to make us happy.

It's not the first glimpse we see of Android 11. Google has already released some early developer previews. These were specifically intended for developers to test their existing apps against the new Android 11. The fact that Google is now releasing the first official beta is an important step towards its actual launch. It will follow sometime in the autumn of 2020, possibly at the same time as the launch of the Pixel 5.

Android 11 People
Conversions grouped with extra control

People

As always, Google's new Android version focuses on a few essentials. This year these are 'contacts', 'control', 'privacy' and 'developer friendly'. For daily users, only the first 3 are interesting. For example, Android has 11 conversation notifications. You will see an icon of the contact in the status bar instead of the app. From now on, notifications will also be grouped into 'conversations', 'alerting notifications' and 'silent notifications' instead of crisscrossing each other. Something else are 'Bubbles' that float above the screen and in this respect resemble what Facebook Messenger did earlier. Now other messaging apps can use that functionality as well.

Android 11 Controls and Privacy
More control and privacy in Android 11

Controls and Privacy

Google continues with Android 11 to give you easier access to your controls. For example, your lights and payment cards can now be accessed by long pressing the power button. Previously you had to go to an app to do that. You'll also be able to control your music more easily, directly from the notification window. New to privacy is that you can now give apps one-time access to use your location, microphone or camera. Previously, the choice was limited to always, never and only when the app is open.

Pixel but also Oppo, Xiaomi and OnePlus

Just because the first beta has been released doesn't mean you can start using Android 11 right away. The beta is available for a select group of phones, of course first for existing Pixel phones including the Pixel 4 and 4XL up to and including the Pixel 2. Meanwhile, manufacturers such as Oppo, Xiaomi and OnePlus have also announced to roll out Android 11 beta to their devices. The question is whether you should want to; betas contain bugs and are therefore not recommended for phones that you use as your daily driver.

Google cancels Google I/O 2020 over fears of Corona virus

Industry news ·

And yet another event has fallen victim to the novel Corona virus. Google cancels its annual Google I/O developer event that would start on May 12th. Earlier, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was cancelled in fear of spreading the virus.

In a blogpost Google explains its decision. Developers and other people who had already bought a ticket will get their money back. Within a few weeks Google will come up with an alternative. One possibility is that the event will be live streamed only.

Google I/O 2020

Google I/O is traditionally the place where the next version of Android will be demonstrated. Skipping is therefore not an option. Many events are currently suspended due to concerns about the outbreak of the novel Corona virus (COVID-19). Earlier, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona was cancelled, which forced many phone manufacturers to think of alternatives to announce new mobile phones. Facebook F8 and the Game Developer Conference (GDC) were also cancelled. Apple's WWDC, which usually takes place in June, hasn't been cancelled yet, but insiders are expecting this to happen.

Android 11

The launch of Android 11 does not seem to be in any danger for the time being. Google I/O is just a single step in the total release scheme. Usually we don't get more than a demonstration and a few key points. More importantly, Google has already released a developer version of Android 11. With version 11 Google focuses on 5G, foldable screens, Bubbles and faster updates. This so-called Developer Preview can only be downloaded for some Pixel phones. However it is not recommended for use on your daily driver because of the many bugs it has.
