Trump wants 'Quid pro quo' from Apple to lock iPhones

"We help them with trade and they do nothing in return."

Not entirely unexpectedly, the U.S. President intervened in the case of the locked iPhone of an alleged terrorist. Earlier, the FBI had criticised Apple for what they saw as 'limited cooperation'. Trump gets excited on Twitter because he always helps Apple about trade but gets nothing in return.

Apple has a very good reason not to open the iPhone of the terrorist; they can't do it. According to Apple, there is no loophole in the iPhone. It is also not the intention to build them in, then not only the good ones but also the bad ones could make use of them, so the idea is. In addition, Apple has already submitted a lot of data to the U.S. authorities, including iCloud.

As usual, Donald does not hide his opinion and demands cooperation from Apple. "We help Apple with TRADE and many other things every time and yet they refuse to unlock the phones of murderers, drug dealers and other violent criminals. They're gonna have to step it up... "Quote. It is known that top man Tim AppleCook and Trump get along well in business and it is unclear what this case does with that relationship.

Pensacola shooter

The case is all about two iPhones of a Saudi Second Lieutenant who was training in the US and shot three American soldiers. An iPhone 5 was seized along with an iPhone 7, which shot the shooter on the spot. The FBI did manage to repair the phones (the iPhone 5 was disabled beforehand) but they did not manage to unlock them. In previous cases this was successful, for example the iPhone 5c of the San Bernardino shooter in 2017.

At Apple they are behind the scenes surprised about how fast this case is escalating. In a public press release, Apple said it had done and handed over everything the DOJ asked for. Moreover, cracking these (old) iPhones should be possible with the help of specialized companies, as it has done in the past. Why not choose that route now is a mystery to Apple.
