Leaked specs Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold Wide: larger battery, no Exynos

Details have emerged about Samsung's next generation of foldable phones. Leaked specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold Wide align with previous reports in several respects, but some new details have emerged. Additionally, a potential launch date is circulating.

Greek blog Techmaniacs shares the first specifications of the upcoming Fold 8 and Fold Wide. We start with the former, and Techmaniacs immediately tempers expectations. The Fold 8 does not promise to be as big an update as the Fold 7.

The changes are mainly in the processor, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 being chosen this time. Samsung is bypassing its own Exynos chip again and remains loyal to Qualcomm for another year. The device is also slightly thinner, though the difference is minimal. Unfolded, the Fold 8 will measure 4.1 millimeters, which is 0.1 millimeters less than before. The weight reportedly comes to 210 grams, which is 5 grams lighter: all too minor to notice.

Larger battery camouflages lack of real innovation

Despite the slightly smaller body and weight, the new Fold 8 will reportedly feature a larger battery. It is said to be a 5000 mAh unit, matching previous rumors.

That is still small compared to the 6000 mAh battery in the Oppo Find N6 and the Motorola razr Fold, but it is 600 mAh more than its predecessor. Charging also increases from 25 to 45 watts, though it still pales in comparison to Oppo's 80W.

Regarding the cameras, only the ultra-wide-angle lens sees changes, with the resolution increasing from 12 to 50 megapixels. The main camera remains 200 megapixels, and the telephoto lens likely stays at 10 megapixels, as do the two selfie cameras.

Fold Wide: wider screen compromises on several fronts

For the Wide, the publication also listed several specifications. The device features a 7.6-inch foldable screen (smaller in surface area than the Fold) with a 4:3 ratio. Expect one fewer camera on the back (dual 50 megapixels) and a battery capacity of 4800 mAh with 45W fast charging.

Launch date: Unpacked expected July 22

Samsung is likely to hold its next Unpacked event on Wednesday, July 22, according to various reports. The Fold 8, Flip 8, and the new Fold Wide are expected to debut during this presentation. Whether Samsung has a successor to the TriFold ready remains unclear for now.
