Kroes: Ditch roaming costs

Using the mobile internet should be as expensive as mobile internet in your home country within the EU, says the dutch european commissioner Neelie Kroes

Kroes is battling against high roaming costs for data and calls for some time now. Before, Kroes only stated that she wanted operators to lower the costs. Now she wants them to entirely abolish costs for roaming. If that becomes a law, it will be a major drawback for operators, specially those in large countries with many tourists.

Kroes ha a long history in fighting for consumer rights in the ICT sector. In the previous European Commission, she was responsible for competition on the internal market of the EU. She gave Microsoft a big fine, and forced the company to introduce Windows XP N, a version without Windows Media Player.

Now that she's responsible for telecommunication, Kroes targets mobile operators and manufacturers of handsets. Among others, she's investigated the policies in the App Store on Apple's iPhone, and has suggested that it may be obligatory for Apple to allow third party app stores in the future.
